A modern premier of Almeida’s opera about Phaedra’s forbidden love for her son, Hyppolitus.
This painfully intimate, yet also soaringly dramatic piece, staged as an entertainment for the God Neptune in the manner of a piece of ‘grand guignol’, reflected the theatricality of the conceit of the God’s playing with humans like pieces in a chess game.
