Comus

By Milton/ Handel/ Arne
A modern premiere
London Handel Festival
April 2011

A new staging of this ‘lost’ masterpiece with text by Miton and newly discovered music by Handel.

A piece concerning imminent danger in the darkness, of a malevolent force, intent on bringing terror and chaos on the innocent.

A re-imagining to a Blitz torn London, peopled with red cross nurses as guardian angels and black out wardens adrift in the rubble.

Using the entire space of St George’s Church in Mayfair (where Handel worshipped), guardian angels sang and spoke from the upper balconies, the orchestra became Comus’ henchmen and a May Queen surveyed proceedings from the pulpit.
