A Little Night Music was Martin’s third Sondheim musical which he directed at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Sondheim’s bitter sweet, turn of the century hymn to lost love and loss was played on three sides in an intimate, minimal production.

The liebeslieder, commonly used as a chorus in other productions, became fully integrated into the piece, becoming servants to the various households with each one having a distinct personality and a series of relationships with the others.

Stripped back to bare brick walls and dressed in black and white, the piece revealed itself as an honest and emotionally raw chamber piece.
